The first cathedral was built during the VIIth century, and was already named « Sainte Croix » (Holy Cross). Various cathedrals and chapels, alternately of Roman and Gothic style succeeded one to another on the site, destroyed and reconstructed in function of historical events and religious wars.

On the 9th of august 1599, Henri VI, decided the reconstruction of the cathedral financed by the royal treasure.
The construction took over 200 years and was officially inaugurated on May, the 8th of 1829 with the 4th anniversary of the liberation of Orleans by Joan of Arc.
